DUO SATSUZEN is a unique formation that started from a friendship of more than 30 years and a shared passion for the flute, the flutes, which invites each flutist to discover the other one’s musical world. The meeting between the delicate Japanese music shaped with silence and the virtuosity of Western Classical musical draws a palette of shadows and lights. Through the love of nature – trees, wind, birds – DUO SATSUZEN’s music unfolds as an universal language.

DUO SATSUZEN aims to give new sound experiences to their audience and inspire composers to write music for them combining Japanese and Western musical traditions.

World premieres

In early 2021, Duo SATSUZEN received two new compositions dedicated to them:
– “Ellipse” by Elizabeth BROWN (for shakuhachi and flute, commissioned by the Hijiri Shakuhachi Foundation for Duo SATSUZEN.)
– “Ginyo” 銀葉 (for shakuhachi and alto flute) by Atsuki SUMI.

Un concert « magique », une première ! de surcroît, où l’Asie rencontre l’Europe, où deux cultures se mélangent avec bonheur. Deux instruments aux sonorités infiniment différentes, à priori, mais qui, à certains moments, parviennent à une telle symbiose que l’on ne sait plus qui joue quoi !

Le concert inhabituel le 3.4.2022 m’a plu à cause de la mise ensemble de la flûte traversière et la flûte shakuhachi. Par moments j’ai du arrêter de laisser agir la musique sur moi, les yeux fermés pour vraiment voir, laquelle des flûtes était en train d’être jouée, tellement elles étaient en harmonie. Les explications des flûtistes concernant l’instrument m’ont aidée à réaliser le travail qu’il y a derrière la performance, le concert . Comme je n’ai pas l’habitude d’une musique japonaise, j’ai écouté sans jugement. Le calme m ‘a fait méditer et m’imaginer les scènes au village des pêcheurs, d’un champs, de la mer etc. Bravo ! Kathrin
